Flare

Project : Flare, lighting collection
Mission : Product Design
Client : Milan Design Week 2025
Year : 2025

Flare is a lighting collection developed by Douze Degrés as part of its research on optics. Inspired by maritime lighthouses, it transforms a simple flame into a luminous signal. Using an optical lens, the candlelight is captured, amplified, and projected—turning a soft glow into a vibrant beam.

History of the
Flare Lighting
Collection

The story of Flare began with an exploration of the visual distortion created by the Fresnel lens. We first experimented with them during a scenography project at 3,600 meters altitude, for a live show at the Sphinx Observatory for Cercle Music.

By observing the similarities between the posture of cameramen and that of astronomers, we envisioned a series of objects that highlight an immaterial element: light. These structures offer a playground for cameramen, enhancing live capture with their dynamic interplay of light and form.

We then experimented with the visual effects the lens could create in natural environments, adding unpredictable light sources such as flames.

We created versatile lights that we could observe in different conditions, from different angles. The result of this experimentation was a photographic and video documentation of the materialization of the unpredictable alterations and movements of a simple flame, perceptible through the lens.
